Job Summary/Objective: A Mainframe Senior Developer is responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing mainframe applications and systems. They possess extensive knowledge and experience working with mainframe technologies, programming languages, and development tools. Here’s a sample job description for a Mainframe Senior Developer

Responsibilities:

  • Design, code, test, and maintain mainframe applications and systems based on project requirements and specifications.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, architects, and stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior developers, assisting them with problem-solving, code reviews, and best practices.
  • Analyze and debug complex mainframe applications, identify issues, and implement appropriate fixes and enhancements.
  • Optimize application performance and efficiency through tuning, refactoring, and code improvements.
  • Collaborate with the testing team to ensure high-quality deliverables by participating in test planning, execution, and defect resolution.
  • Document application designs, code changes, and technical specifications to ensure proper knowledge transfer and future maintainability.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and advancements in mainframe technologies, tools, and methodologies.

Experience:  

  • years of experience in mainframe development, including proficiency in languages such as COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, or JCL.
  • Strong knowledge of mainframe tools and utilities, such as IMS, DB2, CICS, VSAM, or ISPF.
  • Experience with mainframe development environments, such as IBM z/OS, TSO/ISPF, and JCL.
  • Proficiency in debugging and troubleshooting mainframe applications using tools like IBM Debug Tool or Xpediter.
  • Solid understanding of software development methodologies, version control systems, and defect tracking tools.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.

Education & Certifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree is a must.

  • Excellent facilitation, communication, risk management, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience in interacting and communication with a wide range of individuals at both a strategic and tactical level.
  • Understanding of software development and infrastructure project lifecycles.
  • Experience in managing project budgets and understanding project financials.
  • Desired computer skills include Project Management Software, Outlook, MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
